Zenoss Quarterly Zenpack Update for 2016-Q2

The focus during Q2 for the Zenoss Solutions (Zenpack Development) group was targeted on enhancing cloud monitoring capabilities (Azure), building out OpenStack integrations (Ceph, Cinder, LVM) , and the continued enhancement and maintenance of the robust Zenoss ZenPack catalog.

Twenty individual ZenPacks were launched, enhanced/maintained, or certified for the 5.x platform during the 2nd quarter of 2016. Zenpacks can be downloaded from the Zenpack Wiki: http://wiki.zenoss.org/ZenPacks_by_Zenoss

ZenPacks Enhancements:

Azure 1.1.1: - This release is a major step forward in how Zenoss does cloud monitoring.  Previously, Zenoss modeled and monitored the basic services, events, and metrics of Azure.  However, as cloud adoption continues to increase, customers demand insight beyond basic monitoring.

As cloud infrastructures grow, managing the appropriate level of provisioning and estimating monthly expenditure becomes complex.  The latest Azure release provides detailed insight into current spending by regions and services, and provides forecasting of future spending based on current usage and trends.

Ceph 2.0.0: -  To enhance ease of use, Zenoss added the ability to monitor Red Hat's software defined block device storage & object gateway storage solution via SSH (Ceph 1.0.0 provided monitoring via Calamari, both methods can be in the 2.0.0 release).  This is a great step towards increasing adoption of the Ceph ZP.

  • SSH is quicker to setup if no existing Calamari system exists. The SSH API makes direct contact to each host to pull data

  • Calamari: Beneficial when a Calamari monitoring setup exists and you want to avoid the overhead associated with directly talking to the Ceph cluster. Because Calamari caches data, it creates less load on your server

OpenStack Infrastructure 2.2.0:  - Provides increased visibility into storage solutions used within OpenStack by adding integrations for Cinder block storage components, LVM, and Ceph block storage.  The major benefit of these storage integrations is they provide a bi-directional/end-to-end view of the storage volumes and health of the underlying devices also monitored by Zenoss.

Windows 2.6.0: - As customers are migrating from the legacy ZP (ZenPacks.zenoss.WindowsMonitor)  to the current Windows ZP (ZenPacks.zenoss.Microsoft.Windows) Zenoss experienced a customer demand to upgrade how Windows Services are monitored and managed.

In this ZP release Zenoss re-instituted the much beloved ‘Windows Services’ page and made it work nicely with both the current and legacy Windows ZPs.  Windows services can now be monitored and managed from a single page available from Infrastructure View --> Windows Services.

This functionality will assist customers in managing their Windows ZP migration as customers transition from the 4.x to 5.x platform.  This update also includes 18 bug/ticket fixes.

Layer2 - 1.2.1: - To increase robustness, speed, and performance of the Layer2 ZP and its associated event suppression capabilities, the Layer2 ZP was refactored to use Redis as a storage backend.   This enhancement prevents issues that previously arose when ZoDB would grow over time and not properly clear old data causing performance degradation
