How To Monitor Windows 2012, 2012 R2, 2008R2 And 2003 Standard Edition Servers With The Microsoft Windows Zenpack (Using WinRM)

Applies to:

  • Windows 2012 & 2012 R2 Server
  • Windows 2008R2 Server
  • Windows 2003 Standard Edition Server

Summary

In this article, we prepare Windows server versions 2012, 2012 R2,  2008R2 and 2003 Standard Edition for monitoring using the Windows Zenpack. We discuss preparing servers using both Group Policy (to standardize configuration across all servers) and individual server configuration. Our configuration procedures are standardized around a low security level configuration (no encryption of credentials or payload) for ease of setup and testing, but the security of WinRM configuration can be improved by encrypting usernames and passwords using Kerberos. You can also configure WinRM to encrypt it's payload using SSL. Each section includes these additional configurations for administrators who need to implement them, which is recommended in a production environment.

Now we badly need a recipe for enabling event log subscriptions that can be deployed in the same way!
